Asbestos in Blayney homes and sheds
Blayney Shire Council says that if a house was built or renovated before 1987, it's likely to have asbestos in it. Common places are fibro walls and eaves, wet-area linings, corrugated asbestos-cement roofing on sheds, and old vinyl floor tiles. Council's advice is blunt: don't cut, drill, sand, water-blast or dump it.
Naturally occurring asbestos
Blayney is unusual: council says parts of the shire are considered to contain naturally occurring asbestos, which can turn up in rock veins during roadworks, construction and excavation. If you're planning earthworks, ask a licensed professional whether testing is needed before you dig.
Local disposal
The NSW EPA lists the Blayney Waste Facility at 4165 Mid Western Highway as accepting household asbestos. Phone (02) 6368 2104 before you go. See our disposal guide for other options.
Who can remove it
In NSW, SafeWork NSW says a licensed professional must remove any friable asbestos and any amount of bonded (non-friable) asbestos over 10 m², and it recommends a licensed professional for any amount. See the NSW rules guide.
